Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Discusses Communist China’s Threats to American Democracy

In a recent interview with the Texas Public Policy Foundation, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Americans to ignore anti-US propaganda spread by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and gave his perspective on the current Biden administration’s China policies.

In the interview, Mr Pompeo denied that the United States was falling behind China.

“I don’t believe for a moment that we’re in second place, but there’s a real risk of that,” said the former U.S. Secretary of State.

“For four decades, Republicans and Democrats alike thought that engagement with China would be a solution. . .we thought that they’d become less hostile, that they would engage in the world and trade on a set of rules that we understood and when they made promises internationally, whether that was about the South China Sea or Hong Kong or Taiwan or Tibet, that they’d live up to them, and that all we needed to do was trade a little bit more with them.”

Mr Pompeo stated this strategy proved to be a failure and complete misunderstanding of the CCP and its leaders, including Xi Jinping.

Although the Trump administration traded fairly and reciprocally with China, its “America First” policy prioritised American workers’ protection.

On the other hand, the Trump administration pushed back against many CCP policies and plans which conflicted with international peace and stability, such as the Belt and Road Initiative.

“It was a blessing to have a president that was prepared to lead and take the risk that was associated with that, but we were serious about it.”

Mr Pompeo also provided solid and straightforward advice for the Biden administration. He noted how the CCP’s argument style was incredibly morally relativistic at the recent US-China talks in Anchorage, Alaska, such as the accusation that the US lacks human rights understandings; an ironic remark coming from the CCP, considering the regime’s ongoing brutal genocide of Uyghurs in Xinjiang and human rights violations against Tibetans, Hong Kong citizens, and various other ethnic minorities in China.

The former US Secretary of State also highlighted the CCP’s verbal attack on the fundamental nature of the United States, along with its spread of false media propaganda claiming an American decline. He also commented the Biden administration should push back against the CCP’s false claims of American decline

“The theory of American decline is something I hope that Americans don’t come to believe. It’s fundamentally untrue. . .we have to make sure it doesn’t become true,” Mr Pompeo said.

The former US Secretary of State warned that the US must not allow the CCP to continue spreading their lies and Marxist-Socialist ideologies.

“People are dying for leadership from the United States of America. They want us to be there. We are the bulwark of economic security, we are the bulwark of diplomatic capacity and power, and of course, we have an unrivalled military capability as well,” said the former US Secretary of State.

The stability of world affairs largely depends on the post-world war international order initiated and maintained by the US and its allies. As Mr Pompeo said, if the West is to maintain its freedom and continue to support other countries in their development, the Biden administration must ensure the CCP’s theory of American decline does not become a reality. If the CCP replaces the US position, a grim future of global communist oppression is sure to follow.
