U.S. Secretary of State Visits Belgium To Address NATO Alliance and the Transatlantic Relationship

According to a United States Department of State fact sheet released on Monday, March 22, U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Belgium to particulate in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Foreign Ministerial held at Brussels from March 22-25.

During his visit, Blinken will speak with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Allied Foreign Ministers, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, and Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès.

“Secretary Blinken will emphasise the strength of the Transatlantic relationship, NATO’s ongoing success in safeguarding the Transatlantic community, the Alliance’s adaptation to new security challenges, and the Administration’s desire to repair, revitalise, and raise the level of ambition in U.S.-EU relations,” the fact sheet reads.

The U.S. Secretary of State’s visit has indeed started with a bang, with the U.S., U.K., EU and Canada all issuing sanctions on CCP officials involved in Uyghur Muslims’ abuse in China’s Xinjiang province.

“NATO leaders are actively considering the security implications of China’s aggressive and coercive behaviour. Beijing is investing in infrastructure in Europe, while at the same time building up its military and expanding its footprint in cyberspace, the Arctic, and in areas that directly affect Transatlantic security, including the Middle East and Africa,” states U.S. Department of State fact sheet.

Now in its 72nd year, NATO is the alliance between the U.S. and European nations. The U.S. is committed to its NATO Allies and Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, and the parties have an agreement to protect the Euro-Atlantic region.

The NATO alliance challenged the Communist bloc during the Cold War and now has missions worldwide, including Afghanistan and Iraq.
